Petit-Roy Bourgogne Blanc “Challenge” 2023

A beautifully precise and energetic white Burgundy from Seiichi Saito, the winemaker behind Domaine Petit-Roy in Chorey-lès-Beaune. Saito honed his craft at several celebrated Burgundy domaines, including Armand Rousseau and Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, before establishing Petit-Roy in 2017.

The 2023 “Challenge” is 100% Chardonnay sourced from two parcels in Savigny-lès-Beaune, Les Boutières and Les Chevrières. Farmed organically and biodynamically, the fruit is fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in used barrels, followed by additional élevage in tank, with minimal intervention in the cellar.

Fresh and finely detailed, the wine shows lemon, green apple and white peach alongside delicate floral notes and a subtle chalky, saline character. The palate combines bright acidity with a gentle creamy texture, finishing clean, mineral and persistent. There is plenty of Burgundy character here without heaviness or overt oak.

An excellent introduction to Petit-Roy and a compelling example of how much character can be found at the Bourgogne Blanc level in the hands of a thoughtful grower.
