Terroir
The “Dr. L” Riesling from Loosen Bros. originates in Germany’s Mosel Valley, one of the world’s most distinctive and historic regions for Riesling. The vineyards are planted on steep slopes along the Mosel River, where blue and gray slate soils dominate. These slate-rich soils play a critical role in regulating heat, aiding ripening in the cool climate, and imparting the hallmark mineral tension and aromatic lift associated with Mosel Riesling. The 2013 vintage in the Mosel was defined by a long growing season and cooler conditions, allowing for extended hang time and gradual flavor development. These conditions favored finesse over power, resulting in wines with moderate alcohol, vibrant acidity, and precise aromatic expression—qualities that are particularly well suited to the Dr. L style.
Winemaking & Technical Notes
Loosen Bros. “Dr. L” Riesling is crafted from 100% Riesling, sourced from sustainably farmed vineyards throughout the Mosel. Grapes are harvested at ripeness levels that balance natural acidity with a touch of residual sugar, preserving freshness while enhancing approachability.Fermentation takes place in stainless steel at cool temperatures to retain aromatic purity and varietal character. The wine is bottled relatively early to capture vibrancy, with minimal handling and no oak influence. This restrained, traditional approach allows the interplay of fruit, acidity, and slate-driven minerality to take center stage.
Tasting Notes
The 2013 Dr. L Riesling opens with inviting aromas of green apple, white peach, and citrus blossom, accented by subtle notes of wet stone and fresh herbs. With time in the glass, hints of lime zest and delicate petrol begin to emerge, a classic marker of developing Mosel Riesling. On the palate, the wine is lively and balanced, offering a seamless interplay between gentle sweetness and racy acidity. Flavors of crisp apple, lemon, and ripe stone fruit are supported by a light-bodied, silky texture and a pronounced mineral core. The sweetness is well-integrated, never cloying, and serves to enhance the wine’s clarity and length rather than dominate it.
The finish is clean and refreshing, lingering with citrus, slate, and a faint floral lift that encourages another sip.
Food Pairing & Service
Loosen Bros. “Dr. L” Riesling 2013 is a versatile food wine whose balance of acidity and subtle sweetness makes it especially adaptable at the table. It pairs beautifully with spicy and aromatic cuisines, including Thai, Vietnamese, and Indian dishes, where its freshness tempers heat and highlights complex seasoning. The wine also complements seafood such as shrimp, scallops, and lightly smoked fish, as well as poultry dishes with citrus or herbal accents.Soft cheeses, particularly fresh goat cheese or bloomy-rind styles, provide an excellent contrast to the wine’s acidity and mineral edge. Serve well-chilled at 46–50°F (8–10°C). While designed for early enjoyment, the 2013 vintage has developed additional nuance with age and can continue to drink well, showing evolving aromatic complexity over the near term.
