Product Info
The 2019 Bodegas Juan Gil Red Blend is a bold, full-bodied, and highly concentrated red wine from the sun-drenched D.O. Jumilla region in southeastern Spain. Produced exclusively for the US market from estate-grown old vines averaging 50 years of age, this wine delivers a robust and heavily extracted profile. It beautifully balances the rustic, warm Mediterranean fruit of Monastrell with the linear, earthy structure of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Tasting Notes- Aroma: Deep purple in the glass, the nose is intense and expressive, opening with notes of dark cherries, blackberries, mocha, soy sauce, and licorice. As it breathes, it reveals underlying layers of ripe red currant, exotic sweet baking spices, cocoa, vanilla, and a hint of smoky oak wood.
- Palate: Rich, voluminous, and fruit-forward. The palate offers inviting layers of muddled black plums, dark chocolate, and clove, countered by a surprisingly fresh natural acidity. The mouthfeel is plush and velvety, displaying substantial weight and an unyielding, dense core of concentrated dark fruit.
- Finish: Long, warm, and persistent. It signs off with a structured tannin backbone that leaves a dry, slightly savory impression of leather, espresso, and toasted oak.
Technical & Vinification Details- Composition: An intentionally balanced blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Monastrell (Mourvèdre), and 10% Syrah.
- Viticulture: Sourced from dry-farmed, low-yielding old vines grown without pesticides or herbicides. The vineyard terroir features high-altitude, limestone-rich rocky soils that maximize fruit concentration.
- Winemaking: Each variety is hand-harvested, sorted, and fermented independently in stainless steel tanks.
- Maturation: Aged for 12 months in separate French and American oak barrels before final blending and bottling. It is bottled at a powerful 15% ABV, which provides a distinct, warming richness on the palate.
Service & Food Pairings- Serving Tips: Best served at a cool cellar temperature (16–18°C / 60–64°F). Given its high alcohol content, generous oak framing, and tightly wrapped tannins, decanting for 45 to 60 minutes is highly beneficial to allow the dark fruit flavors to expand and the wood spices to soften.
-
Food Pairings: This full-throttle blend requires hearty, protein-rich dishes to cut through its substantial tannins:
- Slow-roasted leg of lamb or grilled lamb chops seasoned with rosemary.
- Thick, marbled cuts of beef like a pan-seared ribeye or smoked beef brisket.
- Rich, tomato-based meat stews or wild boar ragù.
- Sharp, aged cheeses such as Manchego, Gouda, or mature cheddar.
