One of the more distinctive reds of the Canary Islands, Borja Pérez’s Ignios Orígenes Baboso Negro comes from the volcanic landscape of northern Tenerife. Baboso Negro — known as Alfrocheiro in Portugal — is exceptionally scarce in the Canary Islands and notoriously difficult to grow, producing tiny yields but wines of remarkable character.

The 2018 comes from a vineyard planted in 1997 and was made from fully destemmed fruit, fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 14 months in 600-liter barrels. Production was extraordinarily small: just 720 bottles and 24 magnums.

Powerful yet remarkably fresh, the 2018 combines raspberry and dark fruit with dried rose, black tea, subtle smoke and a distinctive blood-orange freshness. Firm, dusty tannins and bright acidity give the wine structure, while its savory, mineral character speaks unmistakably of Tenerife’s volcanic soils.

Luis Gutiérrez of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate awarded the 2018 94 points, describing it as an original, characterful expression of this exceedingly rare variety.
