Product Info
The 2024 Domaine Morey-Coffinet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "La Romanée" represents the pinnacle of structural tension, altitude, and classicism in the estate's stellar white lineup. Entirely separate from the famous red Grand Cru in Vosne, Chassagne’s La Romanée sits steeply near the very top of the slope, highly sheltered from northern winds by a dense stand of trees. The challenging, heavily rain-soaked spring of 2024 gave way to a perfect sunny August and dry September. Because of the vineyard's thin ground and high elevation, this vintage produced an extraordinarily fresh, citrusy, and mineral-driven wine that top critics compare to the legendary, cool-vintaged structure of 2021 and 2008.Tasting Profile- Appearance: A glowing, brilliant mid-yellow hue with crystalline clarity.
- Aroma: Initially discreet and tightly wound, it gradually unfolds to reveal a pristine bouquet of ripe lemon, crisp orchard pear, white peach, and delicate citrus blossom. This is underpinned by a deep, flinty, and smoky natural reduction mixed with chalk and subtle hazelnut.
- Palate: Powerful, concentrated, and immensely focused. Renowned critic Jasper Morris noted that while the youthful fruit profile is just beginning to form, “the sheer class of La Romanée expresses itself beautifully on the palate. This has more backbone than the others, even Cailleret.” It pairs deep mineral power with a remarkably fresh, chiseled, and structured core.
- Finish: Exceptionally long, persistent, and saline, carrying a signature chalky minerality and refined, racy energy to the end.
Winemaking Details- The Vineyard: Sourced from a prized 0.81-hectare parcel featuring old vines planted in 1957. The soil is composed of a rare mix of flint and clay with roughly 25% limestone, which yields naturally low, highly concentrated grape quantities.
- Elevage: Thibault Morey adheres strictly to certified organic and biodynamic practices. The wine undergoes native-yeast fermentation and is aged for 14 to 16 months in a combination of 228L and 350L oak barrels (about 30% to 50% new wood) before being bottled completely unfiltered.
Serving & Cellaring- Service: Do not serve over-chilled. Enjoy at 12–13°C (53–55°F) in large Burgundy stems, giving it a healthy decant if opening in its youth to blow off the initial reductive toast.
- Cellaring: This wine is built for longevity. While it can be enjoyed between 3 and 7 years after bottling, critics recommend laying it down to drink from 2030 to 2035 to experience its full complexity and resolved structure.
- Pairing: Truly a wine for grand dishes. Its power and high structural backbone complement roasted capon or turkey with black truffles, rich lobster in butter sauces, sweetbreads, or fine veal chops
