Chassagne-Montrachet may be best known for its great white wines, but the village has a long history with Pinot Noir — and Jean-Marc Pillot's Mes Vieilles Vignes is a superb reminder of just how compelling red Chassagne can be.

Produced from old Pinot Noir vines planted around 1960, this village-level cuvée delivers a degree of depth and complexity that punches well above its classification. The 2022 combines ripe dark cherry, raspberry and spiced plum with subtle notes of earth, bramble and minerality. The palate is concentrated yet wonderfully energetic, framed by fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity, with an earthy, savory character emerging through the long finish.

Pillot ferments the wine with 100% whole clusters, adding aromatic complexity and structure, while the élevage avoids new oak, allowing the old-vine fruit and character of Chassagne to remain firmly in the foreground.

The generous fruit of the excellent 2022 vintage makes this approachable relatively young, but there is ample structure for further development in bottle. A terrific introduction to red Chassagne-Montrachet — and a particularly compelling value for old-vine Côte de Beaune Pinot Noir.
