Product Info
Les Carrétals sits at the pinnacle of Anne Gros and Jean-Paul Tollot's remarkable Minervois project — a tiny, single-vineyard wine produced from extraordinarily old Carignan and Grenache vines planted in 1909.
Anne Gros, one of the leading names of Vosne-Romanée, and Jean-Paul Tollot of Domaine Tollot-Beaut brought their Burgundian sensibility south to the Minervois, seeking distinctive old vineyards where individual terroirs could be expressed with the same precision they pursue in Burgundy. Les Carrétals is perhaps the clearest expression of that philosophy.
The wine comes from just 1.07 hectares of 115-year-old vines rooted in clay-limestone soils. The grapes are harvested by hand, completely destemmed in the Burgundian fashion, and the wine is aged entirely in barrel.
The 2024 is deep and concentrated, with layers of blackberry, cassis and dark plum alongside black pepper, licorice, Mediterranean herbs and a subtle mineral character. Despite its richness, there is freshness and energy running through the wine, with beautifully integrated tannins and a long, savory, spice-inflected finish.
This is not simply a powerful southern French red. There is a distinctly Burgundian sense of precision and restraint to the wine — Anne Gros has referred to Les Carrétals as the “Richebourg of the south.”
A fascinating bottle for anyone who loves great Burgundy but wants to explore what two accomplished Burgundian growers can achieve with century-old vines in the south of France.
