Domaine A. & P. de Villaine's La Digoine is one of the estate's most distinctive red Burgundies, produced from Pinot Noir grown on a historic hillside vineyard overlooking the village of Bouzeron in the Côte Chalonnaise.

The domaine was established by Aubert de Villaine, longtime co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, and Pamela de Villaine, and has played an important role in demonstrating the quality possible in this quieter corner of Burgundy. Today, the estate remains focused on organic farming, sensitive winemaking and transparent expressions of its individual vineyard sites.

La Digoine comes from an east-facing slope with limestone-rich soils particularly well suited to Pinot Noir. Although bottled as Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise, it is very much a vineyard-specific wine, offering considerably more personality and sense of place than the regional designation might suggest.

The 2023 is fragrant and energetic, with red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry complemented by floral notes, subtle spice and an earthy, mineral undertone. The palate is supple and finely structured, combining the generosity of the vintage with fresh acidity and delicate tannins. There's an appealing savory quality beneath the fruit that should become increasingly complex with bottle age.

An excellent example of why serious Burgundy drinkers increasingly look to the Côte Chalonnaise, La Digoine combines pedigree, terroir and relative accessibility in a beautifully understated Pinot Noir. It can be enjoyed young for its vibrant fruit and perfume, while possessing enough structure to develop gracefully in the cellar.
