The 2021 Domaine Clusel-Roch Côte-Rôtie 'Les Grandes-Places' is a profound, structured, and elegant 750ml single-vineyard Northern Rhône red wine. It features old-vine 'Sérine' (the traditional low-yielding local Syrah clone of Ampuis) planted in 1935 on steep, hand-worked schist and iron-rich mica-schist soils above Verenay.
Terroir: Steep, southeast-facing upper slopes with crumbly schist and iron-flecked soils that allow roots to dig deep.Viticulture: Organic farming pioneered early in the region, utilizing massal selection from original 1935 plantings.Vinification: Traditional gravity-fed vinification with partial destemming and whole-bunch inclusion, fermented via native yeasts.Aging: Matured for two years in French oak barrels (around 20% to 25% new) and bottled without filtration.Aromas: Deep, reticent, and mineral-driven nose with notes of dark brambly berries, black cherries, fresh plums, violets, and graphite, complemented by subtle whole-bunch herbal complexity.Palate: Precise, tense, and chiseled with a concentrated core of cool-climate fruit, a fine-grained, structured tannin framework, and a vibrant, long, delicately peppery mineral finish.Maturity: Built for long-term cellaring; it requires significant ageing or extended decanting to fully unfurl.
