Product Info
The 2023 Argiano Solengo Toscana IGT is an opulent, world-class Super Tuscan blend from the renowned Montalcino estate. Known colloquially as the "Super Tuscan of Montalcino," Solengo was originally created by legendary enologist Giacomo Tachis. The 2023 growing season was highly challenging, requiring meticulous, rigorous fruit selection across the individual grape varieties to maintain the wine's signature tension and balance. In this vintage, Merlot has been entirely phased out, allowing Cabernet Franc to move forward as a primary component.
Aroma and BouquetThe nose is intensely complex, captivating, and expressive, layering sweet floral tones over savory nuances:- Fruit: Pure primary aromas of wild blackberries, ripe cherry skin, cranberries, and rich fruit preserves.
- Florals & Accents: A fragrant bouquet of crushed violets and lavender, complemented by a delicate whiff of sweet smoke.
- Spice & Herb: Savory streaks of cracked white pepper, bay leaf, liquorice, dried mint, cloves, and tomato leaf.
Palate and TextureOn the palate, it delivers a muscular, full-bodied experience showing exceptional balance:- Flavors: Saturated black currants, dark plums, and chocolate mingle with a persistent graphite minerality and citrus-laced edges.
- Texture & Body: Deeply concentrated and full-bodied, yet light on its feet with a cooling, seamless wave of silky textures.
- Structure: Tautly strung with tantalizing, refreshing acidity that expertly counters its heavy fruit weight.
- Tannins & Finish: Framed by a firm web of grippy, fine-grained tannins that flex on the close. The finish is long and powerful, revealing extra structural bulk alongside hints of vanilla and cinnamon.
Technical & Blend Details- Blend Composition: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 15% Petit Verdot, and 5% Sangiovese.
- Terroir: Grown on the historic Montalcino estate at an altitude of over 1,000 feet above sea level. The vines sit in Eocenic soils formed by marl limestone and clay, benefiting from a steady night cooling that helps lock in natural acidity.
- Winemaking & Aging: Crafted with low-intervention practices, including spontaneous fermentation and minimal racking. The wine is aged in meticulously selected, fine-grained French oak barriques. [1]
- Alcohol Content: 14.0% ABV.
- Farming: Certified Organic.
Critical Acclaim & Cellaring AdviceThe 2023 vintage has been widely praised by critics, earning a 95-point score from Falstaff and a 93-point score from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. While its immaculate fruit weight and silkiness make it pleasing in its youth, it possesses a firm structure built to reward long cellaring. It will continue to evolve gracefully through 2035+.- Food Pairings: The bold, muscular nature of this blend makes it a natural partner for a traditional Bistecca alla Fiorentina served with grilled red peppers, a thick veal chop over creamy polenta, or braised wild game.
