Terroir
Vietti’s “Cascinetta” Moscato d’Asti originates in the heart of Piedmont’s Moscato-growing zone, primarily from hillside vineyards surrounding Castiglione Tinella, one of the historical epicenters of Moscato Bianco production. These vineyards sit at elevations between 250 and 400 meters, where cooler nighttime temperatures play a crucial role in preserving aromatics and acidity—essential elements for Moscato of precision rather than simple sweetness. The soils are predominantly calcareous marl with clay and limestone, offering excellent drainage while retaining enough moisture to support steady vine growth during Piedmont’s warm summers. This soil composition contributes to the wine’s subtle mineral tension and prevents the grape’s natural exuberance from tipping into excess. The 2024 vintage favored aromatic expression and balance. A relatively mild growing season with good diurnal shifts allowed Moscato Bianco to ripen slowly, locking in floral intensity while maintaining freshness. The result is a wine that feels lifted, crystalline, and refined—an exemplary expression of Moscato d’Asti’s potential when treated seriously.
Winemaking & Technical Notes
Vietti approaches Moscato d’Asti with the same rigor and restraint it applies to its Barolo and Barbera, emphasizing purity and site expression over overt sweetness. The grapes are harvested early, at optimal aromatic maturity but before sugars climb too high. Fermentation is conducted slowly and at low temperatures in stainless steel, preserving volatile aromatics. Fermentation is intentionally halted before completion, resulting in a wine with naturally low alcohol, 5% and gentle, natural effervescence. The wine is bottled young to capture its freshness, without oak influence or extended aging. Everything in the process is designed to allow Moscato’s natural perfume and delicacy to shine without artifice.
Tasting Notes
The 2024 Cascinetta opens with an immediately captivating aromatic profile, yet one that feels precise rather than perfumed. The nose is layered with white peach, ripe pear, and golden apple, followed by a cascade of orange blossom, acacia, jasmine, and honeysuckle. Beneath the floral intensity lies a subtle herbal edge—fresh sage, lemon verbena, and crushed grape skin—that adds dimension and restraint. On the palate, the wine is light-bodied, airy, and finely textured, with a mousse that is soft and creamy rather than aggressive. Sweetness is present but beautifully calibrated, carried by flavors of peach nectar, apricot, candied citrus peel, and muscat grape, all lifted by vibrant acidity. The balance here is key: the wine never feels cloying, instead gliding across the palate with freshness and poise.
A faint mineral undertone—chalky and clean—grounds the fruit, while subtle bitterness from citrus pith and grape skin keeps the finish focused. The finish is clean, floral, and refreshing, leaving impressions of stone fruit, white flowers, and a whisper of citrus zest. This is Moscato d’Asti at its most elegant: expressive, joyful, but also disciplined.
Food Pairing & Service
Vietti Cascinetta’s low alcohol, gentle sweetness, and high aromatic lift make it exceptionally versatile at the table, particularly with dishes that emphasize freshness and contrast. It pairs beautifully with fresh fruit tarts, peach galette, panna cotta, lemon sponge cake, and almond pastries, where its sweetness mirrors the dessert without overwhelming it. It is equally compelling alongside blue cheeses or triple-cream cheeses, where sugar and acidity balance salt and richness.Unexpectedly, it also shines with lightly spiced cuisines—Thai or Vietnamese dishes with ginger, lemongrass, or chili—where the wine’s sweetness cools heat and amplifies aromatics. Served on its own, it functions effortlessly as an aperitif or celebratory finish to a meal. Serve well chilled, around 40–45°F (4–7°C), in a white wine or small tulip-shaped glass. Drink young, ideally within 1–2 years of vintage, while its aromatics are at peak vibrancy.
