Terroir
This Sancerre originates from vineyards scattered across the rolling hills surrounding the historic town of Sancerre in the eastern Loire Valley. The region’s vineyards sit along the western bank of the Loire River, where a mosaic of soils—particularly limestone-rich caillottes, flint-heavy silex, and clay-limestone terres blanches—create the mineral backbone that defines classic Sancerre. The 2024 vintage benefited from a balanced growing season, with moderate summer warmth and cool nights preserving the bright acidity that Sauvignon Blanc requires to maintain its tension and aromatic precision. The combination of sun exposure on south-facing slopes and the cooling influence of the Loire River allows grapes to ripen gradually, developing expressive citrus and orchard fruit flavors while retaining the hallmark minerality that characterizes wines from this region.
Winemaking & Technical Notes
Sager & Verdier’s Sancerre is produced from 100% Sauvignon Blanc harvested at optimal ripeness to capture both freshness and aromatic purity. The grapes are gently pressed shortly after harvest, minimizing oxidation and preserving delicate varietal aromas.Fermentation takes place primarily in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, allowing the fruit character to remain vibrant and precise. The wine is aged on fine lees for several months before bottling, a process that enhances texture while maintaining the crisp profile expected from Sancerre. Oak influence is intentionally avoided to preserve the clarity and mineral focus that define the style.
The resulting wine reflects a classic Loire Valley philosophy: restrained winemaking designed to highlight terroir rather than mask it.
Tasting Notes
The 2024 Sancerre appears pale straw with green reflections, signaling its youthful freshness. Aromatically, the wine opens with bright notes of lime zest, green apple, and white peach, followed by delicate hints of gooseberry and fresh-cut herbs. Subtle flinty undertones—often described as struck stone—emerge with aeration, a signature of the region’s silex soils. On the palate, the wine is crisp and vibrant, driven by lively acidity that carries flavors of citrus, orchard fruit, and a touch of grapefruit. The texture is clean and focused, with a refreshing mineral streak that runs through the mid-palate and into the finish. The overall impression is precise and energetic, with a balance of fruit brightness and limestone-driven structure.
Food Pairing & Service
Serve well chilled at approximately 45–50°F (7–10°C) to highlight the wine’s refreshing acidity and aromatic clarity. Sancerre is famously versatile with seafood, making it an ideal pairing for oysters, shrimp, scallops, and grilled fish. The wine also complements goat cheese—particularly Crottin de Chavignol, a regional specialty—where its acidity and minerality cut through the cheese’s creamy texture.Additional pairings include fresh salads, herb-roasted chicken, asparagus dishes, and light Mediterranean cuisine. Its clean profile also makes it an excellent aperitif wine.
Cellaring Potential
While Sancerre is typically enjoyed for its youthful vibrancy, the 2024 vintage possesses the balance and acidity to evolve gracefully for several years. Over time, the bright citrus and fresh herb notes may soften, giving way to more subtle honeyed and mineral nuances.Properly cellared in a cool, dark environment, this wine should drink beautifully for 3–6 years from the vintage. While its greatest appeal lies in its fresh, lively character, modest aging can reveal additional textural depth and complexity while maintaining the crisp precision that defines Sancerre.
