Terroir
“Le Tesson” is one of Meursault’s most esteemed lieux-dits, located on the mid-slope just below the Premier Cru belt. This privileged position combines excellent sun exposure with cooling airflow, producing wines that balance concentration with precision. The site is widely admired for its consistency and its ability to convey both richness and minerality. The soils of Le Tesson are predominantly limestone with clay, offering good drainage while retaining enough moisture to support the vines through warmer periods. In 2023, conditions allowed Chardonnay to ripen evenly, yielding fruit with depth and generosity balanced by natural acidity—an ideal canvas for Fichet’s restrained, terroir-driven style.
Winemaking & Technical Notes
Jean-Philippe Fichet approaches Le Tesson with a philosophy of transparency and balance. The wine is made from 100% Chardonnay, hand-harvested and gently pressed to preserve purity. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, with a carefully judged proportion of new oak chosen to enhance texture rather than impart overt oak character.Extended lees aging contributes mid-palate richness and integration, while the élevage is tailored to maintain clarity and freshness. Oak influence remains subtle, allowing the vineyard’s mineral expression and natural structure to define the wine.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 Meursault Le Tesson opens with a complex and poised aromatic profile. Notes of yellow apple, ripe pear, and white peach are layered with citrus zest, almond, and faint floral tones. Subtle hints of crushed stone and hazelnut add depth and typicity. On the palate, the wine is medium- to full-bodied with a beautifully balanced structure. Flavors of lemon curd, orchard fruit, and stone fruit unfold with clarity and depth. The texture is creamy yet precise, supported by vibrant acidity that keeps the wine focused and energetic. The limestone soils assert themselves through a firm mineral backbone that carries the wine through the mid-palate.
The finish is long, elegant, and mineral-driven, lingering with citrus oil, gentle nuttiness, and a saline edge. Le Tesson sits at the crossroads of richness and tension, offering one of the most complete expressions of village-level Meursault.
Food Pairing & Service
Jean-Philippe Fichet Meursault Le Tesson 2023 pairs beautifully with roast chicken, veal, and seafood in butter-based sauces, as well as mushroom risotto and refined vegetable dishes. Its balance of texture and acidity also complements aged Comté and other alpine-style cheeses.Serve at 50–54°F (10–12°C) in a Burgundy-style white wine glass to fully express aromatics and texture. While approachable now, the wine has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully over 8–12 years, gaining savory complexity and depth with age.
