From a property just west of Silverado Trail, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon C.C. Ranch features welcoming scents of dusty earth, black cherries and blackberries. It's full-bodied, rich, concentrated and ripe, framed by dusty tannins and bright acidity on the finish. Drink Date: 2026 – 2040 Reviewed by: Joe Czerwinski Published: Oct 02, 2025

    Terroir
The 2023 C.C. Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon from Nickel & Nickel is sourced from the historic C.C. Ranch vineyard in the Rutherford appellation, one of Napa Valley’s most revered sites for Cabernet Sauvignon.

Located along the western bench of Rutherford, the vineyard benefits from excellent sun exposure and well-drained alluvial soils composed of gravel, loam, and sand. These soils are integral to the region’s signature “Rutherford dust” character, often expressed as a fine, earthy cocoa-like nuance that underpins the fruit.

The site experiences warm days that ensure full ripening, while cool evenings influenced by marine air flowing through the Napa Valley preserve acidity and structure. This balance allows Cabernet Sauvignon to achieve depth and concentration without sacrificing freshness.

The 2023 vintage in Napa Valley offered a long, even growing season, allowing for extended hang time and optimal phenolic maturity. The result is a wine that captures both the richness of Rutherford fruit and the structural precision that defines the appellation.

    Winemaking & Technical Notes
At Nickel & Nickel, each vineyard-designate Cabernet Sauvignon is crafted to express the unique character of its site, with minimal blending and a focus on precision.

The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks. Gentle extraction techniques are used to build structure while preserving purity and balance.

Following fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels for approximately 16–18 months, with a significant portion of new oak. This élevage contributes layers of spice, cedar, and texture while integrating the wine’s tannic structure.

The wine is typically bottled unfined and unfiltered, maintaining its full expression. Alcohol levels fall around 14.8%, supported by balanced acidity and a firm yet refined tannic framework.

    Tasting Notes
The 2023 C.C. Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon displays a deep ruby color with youthful intensity.

The nose is expressive and layered, opening with aromas of blackberry, cassis, and black cherry, intertwined with notes of cocoa, vanilla, and subtle baking spice. With time in the glass, more complex elements emerge—cedar, graphite, and a hint of tobacco add depth and structure.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and richly textured, with a concentrated core of dark fruit. Flavors of cassis, blackberry, and plum are complemented by notes of dark chocolate, espresso, and spice.

The tannins are firm yet finely grained, providing structure and aging potential without overwhelming the fruit. A balanced acidity adds lift and precision, carrying the wine through a long, layered finish marked by dark fruit, mineral undertones, and subtle oak influence.

The overall impression is one of power, polish, and classic Rutherford character.

    Food Pairing & Service
Serve at 60–65°F (15–18°C) in a large Bordeaux-style glass. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully open and soften.

This Cabernet Sauvignon pairs best with rich, savory dishes. Grilled ribeye, filet mignon, or New York strip are natural matches, as the wine’s tannins complement the protein and fat.

It also works beautifully with lamb dishes, braised short ribs, or slow-roasted beef, where the wine’s structure enhances depth and richness. For cheese, aged varieties such as cheddar, Gouda, or Comté provide a balanced pairing.

    Cellaring Potential
The 2023 C.C. Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon has excellent aging potential, with an optimal drinking window of 10–15 years.

While already expressive, the wine will continue to evolve in bottle, developing greater integration and complexity. Expect primary fruit to give way to tertiary notes of leather, tobacco, and earth, while tannins soften and the texture becomes more refined.

With proper cellaring, this wine will reward patience with increased depth, nuance, and elegance, showcasing the full potential of Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon.
