The 2023 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is open-knit, plush and very nicely built. A surprising amount of graphite minerality opens first, lending complexity to the concentrated yet weightless dark berry fruit and subtle tea-like tannins. Finessed, polished and expressive, the 2023 boasts the hallmark Kosta Browne supple, velvety texture. All the elements come together effortlessly. The Kosta Browne house style has certainly modernized over the years, now reflecting less concentration, ripeness and oak imprint than was the norm at the time these wines originally gained critical acclaim. Winemaker Julien Howsepian presented a diverse range of 2023 Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from top sites across California, as well as a selection of négociant bottlings from Burgundy. Today, many of the wines see fermentation in a combination of concrete, stainless steel and oak vessels of varying size, which certainly contributes to the freshness that runs through the entire range. New oak rarely exceeds 40%. Taken as a whole, these wines are super polished and extremely enjoyable, if a bit technical at times. The 2013 and 2015 Gap’s Crown Pinot Noirs are in fabulous shape—quite honestly, they have aged far better than I would have anticipated, given the forward style of the time. Unfortunately, the Burgundian bottlings are particularly anonymous, not to mention considerably more expensive than domaine wines in their peer group. - By Billy Norris on January 2026

The 2023 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir from Kosta Browne is a multi-vineyard expression drawn from some of the most sought-after sites along the rugged Sonoma Coast. Key vineyard sources include Gap’s Crown, Pratt-Sexton, and other coastal-influenced sites, each contributing distinct layers to the final blend. The Sonoma Coast is defined by its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, where persistent fog, strong winds, and cool temperatures create one of California’s most ideal climates for Pinot Noir. These conditions extend the growing season, allowing grapes to ripen slowly and evenly while preserving natural acidity and aromatic precision.
The dominant soil type across these vineyards is Goldridge loam, a well-draining, sandy soil that promotes deep root systems and balanced vine vigor. This soil contributes to the wine’s fine structure and lifted aromatics, while the coastal climate enhances tension and freshness.
The 2023 vintage reflects a long, moderate growing season, producing fruit with clarity, layered complexity, and refined structure—hallmarks of Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.
Winemaking & Technical Notes
At Kosta Browne, the Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is crafted with a meticulous, site-driven approach that balances precision with texture.Fermentation takes place across a mix of vessels—primarily stainless steel, with portions in oak and concrete—to build complexity while preserving fruit purity. A small percentage of whole cluster fermentation is included, contributing aromatic lift and subtle structural tension.
Following fermentation, the wine undergoes élevage for approximately 16 months in French oak, with around 40% new barrels complemented by neutral oak and a portion aged in large-format foudre. This layered aging regimen adds depth, spice, and integration without overshadowing the fruit.
After barrel aging, the wine is briefly held in stainless steel before bottling, allowing the components to harmonize. The final wine typically sits around 14.2% alcohol, with balanced acidity and a refined structural framework.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 Kosta Browne Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir opens with an expressive and layered aromatic profile. Notes of wild blueberry, red plum, and raspberry are interwoven with floral tones, cedar, and a subtle hint of eucalyptus. With time in the glass, additional complexity emerges—black tea, baking spice, and a faint savory edge add depth and intrigue without overwhelming the fruit.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, combining richness with precision. Dark and red berry flavors unfold in layers, supported by fine-grained tannins and a polished texture.
The structure is elegant yet substantial, with a balance of acidity and fruit that gives both energy and weight. The finish is long and refined, marked by lingering fruit, spice, and a subtle earthy nuance.
Food Pairing & Service
Serve at 55–60°F (13–16°C) in a Burgundy-style glass to fully express the wine’s aromatic complexity. Decanting for 30–45 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to open and reveal its layered profile. This Pinot Noir pairs exceptionally well with dishes that mirror its balance of richness and elegance. Duck breast, roast chicken with herbs, and pork loin are natural complements, as the wine’s acidity cuts through fat while its fruit enhances the dish.
It also pairs beautifully with earthy elements such as mushroom risotto, truffle-based dishes, or roasted root vegetables. For seafood, richer preparations like grilled salmon or seared tuna work particularly well.
Aged cheeses such as Gruyère or Comté provide a refined pairing, echoing the wine’s depth and subtle savory complexity.
Cellaring Potential
The 2023 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir has strong mid-term aging potential, with an optimal drinking window of 6–10 years. While already expressive in its youth, time in bottle will allow the wine to further integrate and develop additional layers of complexity. Expect primary fruit to evolve toward dried cherry and plum, alongside emerging notes of forest floor, spice, and tea.
The tannins will soften and the texture will become more seamless, while the wine’s acidity ensures continued freshness and balance. Properly cellared, this wine will reward patience with increased nuance and refinement.
