Terroir
Promis is produced at Gaja’s Ca’Marcanda estate in Bolgheri, located along the Tuscan coast in Tuscany. This Mediterranean-influenced zone has become one of Italy’s most important regions for modern Bordeaux-inspired blends, thanks to its combination of maritime breezes, warm sunlight, and diverse soils. The vineyards lie not far from the Tyrrhenian Sea, where coastal winds help regulate temperatures and reduce disease pressure while preserving freshness in the fruit. The soils in Bolgheri are particularly complex, composed of clay, limestone, gravel, and sand deposited over centuries by ancient marine activity. These well-drained soils encourage deep root systems and naturally balanced vine growth. The warm but moderated climate allows grapes such as Merlot and Syrah to achieve full ripeness while retaining acidity, creating wines that combine generosity with structural elegance. The 2023 growing season offered balanced conditions, producing fruit with excellent aromatic clarity and supple phenolic maturity.
Winemaking & Technical Notes
Promis is a blend of Merlot, Syrah, and Sangiovese, bringing together international and native varieties to create a distinctly Tuscan expression. Each grape variety is harvested separately at optimal ripeness and fermented individually in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve varietal character and aromatic precision. After fermentation, the wine is aged in a combination of French oak barriques and larger oak casks for approximately 12 months. This approach allows the wine to develop structure and subtle complexity while avoiding excessive oak influence. The components are then blended and allowed additional time in bottle before release to ensure harmony and integration.
The winemaking philosophy emphasizes balance and drinkability while maintaining the refinement and polish associated with the Gaja family’s wines.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 Promis pours a deep ruby color with violet highlights. Aromatically, the wine opens with vibrant notes of ripe blackberry, plum, and dark cherry, complemented by hints of violet, black pepper, and Mediterranean herbs. Subtle undertones of cocoa, cedar, and graphite emerge with aeration, reflecting both the blend of varieties and the wine’s time in oak.On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a polished, silky texture. Juicy dark fruit dominates the entry—blackberry, cassis, and plum—while layers of spice, licorice, and savory herbal notes unfold across the mid-palate. The Merlot provides plushness, Syrah contributes spice and structure, and Sangiovese adds brightness and lift.
Fine-grained tannins and balanced acidity give the wine both approachability and structure, leading to a long, harmonious finish marked by dark fruit, subtle earthiness, and gentle oak spice.
Food Pairing & Service
Serve at approximately 60–65°F (16–18°C) and consider decanting for about 30–45 minutes to allow the wine’s aromatics to fully develop. Promis pairs beautifully with classic Tuscan cuisine such as grilled bistecca alla Fiorentina, slow-braised beef ragù, or roasted lamb with rosemary. The wine’s balance of fruit and savory complexity also complements mushroom-based dishes, truffle pasta, or aged cheeses like Pecorino Toscano. Its approachable structure makes it versatile at the table, pairing equally well with rustic and refined dishes.
Cellaring Potential
While Promis is crafted to be approachable relatively early compared to some of Gaja’s more structured wines, it still possesses the balance and structure to age gracefully. The combination of ripe fruit, refined tannins, and vibrant acidity provides a solid foundation for development over time.Properly cellared, the 2023 vintage should evolve well for 8–12 years. As the wine matures, its primary fruit character will gradually give way to more nuanced notes of dried cherry, leather, tobacco, and earthy spice. The texture will soften and integrate further, revealing a more complex and harmonious expression of Bolgheri terroir.
