    Terroir
“Magari” 2023 from Gaja is a refined expression of the coastal vineyards of Bolgheri, located along the Tyrrhenian coast in Tuscany. This area, often associated with the rise of the Super Tuscan movement, offers a unique microclimate that differs markedly from inland Tuscany.

The vineyards of Ca’Marcanda are situated on gently rolling terrain, where proximity to the sea exerts a profound influence. Cooling maritime breezes moderate the warm Mediterranean climate, reducing temperature extremes and extending the growing season. This allows Bordeaux varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc to ripen slowly and evenly, developing complexity while retaining freshness.

The soils are diverse and dynamic, composed of alluvial deposits, clay, sand, and limestone. These variations allow each grape variety to be planted in parcels best suited to its needs—Merlot thrives in clay-rich soils that retain moisture, while Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc benefit from well-draining, stony compositions that enhance structure and aromatic precision.

The 2023 vintage reflects a balance between warmth and freshness, producing fruit that is both expressive and structured. The terroir of Bolgheri imparts a signature profile—ripe yet polished, with a subtle saline and mineral undertone that distinguishes it from inland expressions.

    Winemaking & Technical Notes
At Gaja, under the direction of Angelo Gaja, winemaking is guided by precision, innovation, and a deep respect for terroir. “Magari” is crafted as a harmonious blend, composed of, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot each contributing its own dimension to the final wine.

Grapes are harvested by hand and sorted meticulously before fermentation. Each variety and parcel is vinified separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, allowing for precise extraction and preservation of varietal character.

Fermentation is followed by a period of maceration to build structure and depth, with careful management to ensure balance and finesse. The wine is then transferred to oak barrels—primarily French oak, with a moderate proportion of new wood—for approximately 12 months of aging.

This élevage integrates the wine’s components and adds subtle layers of spice, cedar, and texture without overshadowing the fruit. After blending, the wine is further refined in bottle before release.

Alcohol levels typically fall around 14%, supported by balanced acidity and finely structured tannins. The result is a wine that combines the richness of Bolgheri with Gaja’s signature elegance and precision.

    Tasting Notes
The 2023 “Magari” presents a deep ruby color with vibrant clarity. The nose is expressive and layered, opening with aromas of blackcurrant, ripe cherry, and plum, complemented by notes of blackberry and cassis.

As the wine evolves, more complex nuances emerge—hints of cedar, graphite, and tobacco are interwoven with subtle notes of cocoa, sweet spice, and Mediterranean herbs. A faint saline and mineral edge adds lift and definition.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a refined and polished structure. A core of dark fruit is supported by finely grained tannins that provide both shape and elegance.

Flavors of black cherry, plum, and blackberry are complemented by nuances of mocha, licorice, and a touch of savory herb. The texture is smooth and harmonious, with a balance between richness and freshness.

A vibrant thread of acidity carries through the palate, leading to a long, persistent finish marked by dark fruit, spice, and a subtle mineral tension. The overall impression is one of balance and sophistication, capturing the essence of Bolgheri in a modern, elegant style.

    Food Pairing & Service
“Magari” 2023 is an exceptionally versatile and food-friendly Super Tuscan, capable of pairing across a wide range of cuisines thanks to its balance of fruit, structure, and freshness.
It shines with Tuscan staples such as bistecca alla fiorentina, pappardelle with wild boar ragù, or tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms. Tomato-based dishes—like slow-simmered ragù or eggplant parmigiana—are elevated by the wine’s acidity and savory edge.
Aged cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano, Parmigiano-Reggiano, or aged Gouda complement the wine’s structure and complexity.

Serve at 60–65°F (15–18°C) in a Bordeaux-style glass. Decanting for 45–90 minutes is recommended in its youth to allow the wine to open and fully express its aromatic range.

    Cellaring Potential
The 2023 “Magari” has excellent aging potential, with the structure and balance to evolve over the next 10–15 years.

In its youth, the wine is defined by vibrant fruit and polished tannins, but with time, it will gain additional complexity and depth. Primary flavors will gradually integrate with tertiary notes of leather, tobacco, dried herbs, and earthy spice.

The tannins will soften and become more harmonious, while the wine’s acidity ensures that it retains freshness and definition throughout its evolution.

For collectors and enthusiasts, “Magari” offers both immediate appeal and the promise of a graceful and rewarding development, showcasing the elegance and versatility of Bolgheri’s terroir.
