Terroir
The “Puro” Malbec 2023 from Château de Gaudou is rooted in the historic vineyards of Cahors, in Southwest France, a region often referred to as the birthplace of Malbec (locally known as Côt or Auxerrois). The estate, dating back to the 17th century, is situated along the Lot River, where hillside vineyards benefit from optimal sun exposure and natural drainage. The vines for “Puro” are planted on steep, southeast-facing slopes composed of clay, limestone, and gravel. These soils are essential in shaping the wine’s identity—clay provides body and depth, limestone contributes freshness and lift, and gravel enhances drainage while promoting concentration.
The vineyards are farmed with environmentally conscious practices, avoiding chemical inputs and encouraging biodiversity. Cover crops between rows force the vines to dig deeper into the subsoil, increasing mineral complexity and resilience.
The 2023 vintage reflects a warm but balanced growing season, allowing for full ripening while retaining the natural acidity that defines Cahors Malbec. The result is a wine that combines rustic character with surprising elegance.
Winemaking & Technical Notes
“Puro” is crafted as a pure, unadulterated expression of Malbec, made from 100% estate-grown fruit. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted both in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure quality and precision.Fermentation is carried out using indigenous yeasts in a combination of stainless steel and cement tanks. This approach preserves the wine’s natural character while allowing for gentle extraction and textural development. No oak is used, emphasizing transparency and varietal purity.
The wine is bottled unfined and only lightly filtered, with minimal sulfur added for stability. This low-intervention approach highlights both the raw expression of the grape and the influence of the terroir.
Alcohol levels are moderate at 12%, and the structure leans toward a fresher, more approachable style of Cahors, rather than the heavier, more extracted expressions traditionally associated with the region.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 “Puro” Malbec presents a deep ruby-purple hue, reflecting its varietal intensity while maintaining a sense of vibrancy. On the nose, the wine is expressive and lifted, offering aromas of blackberry, black cherry, and plum, complemented by subtle notes of spice, earth, and a hint of wild herbs. There is a rustic edge typical of Cahors, but it is balanced by freshness and clarity.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with a lively, energetic profile. Dark fruit flavors—blackberry and cassis—are supported by a core of bright acidity and a lightly savory character. The texture is supple yet structured, with fine tannins that provide grip without heaviness.
Compared to richer New World Malbecs, this expression is more restrained and food-oriented, with a focus on balance rather than power. The finish is clean and slightly spicy, with lingering dark fruit and a subtle earthy note.
Food Pairing & Service
Serve slightly cool, around 55–60°F (13–16°C), which enhances the wine’s freshness and highlights its bright acidity. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help open the aromatics. This wine is exceptionally versatile at the table due to its balance of fruit, acidity, and moderate tannin. It pairs beautifully with grilled meats such as lamb chops, sausages, or steak, where its structure complements char and richness.
It also works well with rustic, earthy dishes—mushroom preparations, lentils, or roasted root vegetables—where its savory edge enhances the dish. Charcuterie, pâté, and semi-aged cheeses are particularly successful pairings, echoing the wine’s regional identity.
For a more casual approach, it can even be served slightly chilled alongside simple fare, making it an excellent everyday red.
Cellaring Potential
The 2023 “Puro” Malbec is designed for early to mid-term enjoyment, with an ideal drinking window of 3–6 years. While approachable in its youth, short-term cellaring will allow the wine to integrate further, softening its tannins and developing more pronounced earthy and savory complexity. Over time, expect the fruit to evolve toward dried blackberry and plum, with subtle notes of leather and spice emerging.
It is not intended for long-term aging, but it will reward a few years in bottle with added nuance and cohesion, maintaining its hallmark freshness and drinkability.
