A new addition to the Caterwaul lineup, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford delivers notes of black cherries and dusty earth. It's full-bodied and perhaps even slightly warm, with a welcoming creamy-lushness on the palate and some velvety tannins on the lingering finish.

Caterwaul is a partnership between Thomas Rivers Brown and Matt Hardin, a vineyard manager whose family has holdings in Pope Valley. The blended Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the region's top values, and the single-vineyard wines are evocative of their respective origins. TRB was introduced to Phelan Ranch by Russell Bevan and is now making a blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon off that site. Published: Jun 12, 2025 Reviewed by: Joe Czerwinski

    Terroir
The 2023 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon from Caterwaul is a compelling expression of one of Napa Valley’s most revered sub-appellations: Rutherford. Long celebrated for producing Cabernet Sauvignon of both power and refinement, Rutherford is defined by its distinctive soils, warm climate, and a signature textural quality often referred to as “Rutherford dust.”

The vineyards sourcing this wine are typically situated on the valley floor and lower benchlands, where alluvial fans have deposited a complex mix of gravel, sand, and loam over time. These well-draining soils naturally regulate vine vigor, encouraging smaller berries with thick skins and concentrated flavor. The gravelly composition also contributes to the wine’s structure and its hallmark fine, dusty tannins.

Climatically, Rutherford benefits from warm, sun-filled days that promote full ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon, while cooling influences from the nearby San Pablo Bay moderate temperatures, particularly in the evenings. This diurnal shift helps preserve acidity and aromatic complexity, ensuring balance despite the region’s warmth.

The 2023 vintage reflects these ideal conditions, delivering fruit that is both richly expressive and structurally sound—capturing the essence of Rutherford’s terroir with clarity and precision.

    Winemaking & Technical Notes
Caterwaul is a collaboration between winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown and Matt Hardin, with a focus on producing site-driven Napa Valley wines that balance intensity with elegance. The Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon represents one of the project’s most classic and structured expressions.

Grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness and carefully sorted to ensure quality. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, where temperature control allows for precise management of extraction. Gentle pump-overs and extended maceration help build depth of color, tannin, and flavor while maintaining balance.

The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—typically a mix of new and once-used oak—for approximately 12 to 16 months. This élevage contributes layers of spice, cedar, and subtle toast, while integrating the wine’s structure and enhancing complexity.

The final blend is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, occasionally complemented by small amounts of other Bordeaux varieties depending on the vintage. Alcohol levels fall around 14.8%, supported by firm acidity and finely structured tannins.

The result is a Cabernet Sauvignon that reflects both the richness of Napa Valley and the restraint and precision characteristic of the Caterwaul style.

    Tasting Notes
The 2023 Caterwaul Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon presents a deep ruby-purple color with excellent concentration. The nose is expressive and layered, opening with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark cherry, complemented by notes of plum and cassis.

As the wine develops, secondary and tertiary nuances emerge—cedar, graphite, and tobacco are interwoven with hints of cocoa, vanilla, and baking spice. A subtle earthy undertone, characteristic of Rutherford’s terroir, adds depth and complexity.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet balanced, with a dense core of dark fruit framed by finely grained tannins. Flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum are complemented by notes of mocha, licorice, and a touch of savory herb.

The texture is both powerful and polished, with a structured mid-palate that carries through to a long, persistent finish. A thread of acidity provides lift and freshness, ensuring that the wine remains focused and harmonious.

The overall impression is one of depth and refinement—a Cabernet Sauvignon that captures the essence of Rutherford with both intensity and elegance.

    Food Pairing & Service
This Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon is ideally suited to rich, savory dishes that can match its structure and depth.

Classic pairings include grilled or roasted beef, such as ribeye or filet mignon, as well as lamb and game meats. The wine’s structure and tannins also complement slow-cooked dishes like braised short ribs or stews.

For more nuanced pairings, consider dishes featuring mushrooms, truffles, or herb-driven sauces, which echo the wine’s earthy and savory elements. Aged cheeses—such as cheddar, Comté, or Parmigiano-Reggiano—also provide an excellent match.

Serve at 60–65°F (15–18°C) in a large Bordeaux-style glass. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the wine to open and soften.

    Cellaring Potential
The 2023 Caterwaul Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon has the structure and balance to age gracefully over the next 10–15 years.

In its youth, the wine is defined by its vibrant fruit and firm tannins, but with time, it will develop greater complexity and integration. Primary fruit flavors will evolve into notes of dried blackberry, leather, tobacco, and earthy spice, while the tannins become more refined and harmonious.

The wine’s acidity and structural backbone will help preserve its freshness and definition, allowing it to mature into a more nuanced and layered expression of Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon.

For collectors and enthusiasts alike, this wine offers both immediate appeal and the promise of rewarding development in the cellar
