The 2022 Chianti Classico is a lovely wine from Volpaia. Aromatic, light on its feet and gracious, the Chianti Classico here is a consistently fine example of Radda. Clean mineral notes shape this bright, taut offering. A burst of red fruit, chalk, white pepper and mint lingers on the finish. Drinking Window 2024 – 2032. - By Antonio Galloni on June 2024

    Terroir
The 2022 Chianti Classico from Castello di Volpaia is a vivid expression of high-altitude viticulture in the heart of Chianti Classico, within Tuscany. The estate is uniquely situated around a fortified medieval village, perched at elevations ranging from 400 to 600 meters above sea level—among the highest in the appellation.

These elevations are critical in shaping the wine’s identity. Cooler temperatures and significant diurnal shifts allow for a longer growing season, enabling Sangiovese to ripen slowly while retaining vibrant acidity and aromatic precision. The surrounding forests and natural biodiversity further contribute to a balanced vineyard ecosystem, supporting vine health and resilience.

The soils are a complex mix of sandstone (macigno), limestone (alberese), and clay-rich galestro. This combination provides both structure and finesse—limestone lends tension and minerality, while clay contributes body and depth. The fractured nature of these soils ensures excellent drainage, encouraging deep root systems and concentrated fruit.

The 2022 vintage reflects the challenges and rewards of the growing season, with warm conditions tempered by altitude, resulting in fruit that balances ripeness with freshness. The terroir ultimately yields a Chianti Classico that is both vibrant and structured, embodying the elegance and authenticity of the region.

    Winemaking & Technical Notes
At Castello di Volpaia, winemaking is guided by a philosophy of tradition, sustainability, and precision. The estate is organically farmed, and its gravity-flow winery—integrated into the historic village—allows for gentle handling of the fruit at every stage.

The 2022 Chianti Classico is composed primarily of Sangiovese, with small amounts of complementary varieties, Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon depending on the vintage. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted to ensure quality.

Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, allowing for a gradual extraction of color, flavor, and tannin while preserving the varietal’s bright acidity and aromatic clarity. Maceration is managed to achieve balance, emphasizing finesse over excessive extraction.

Following fermentation, the wine is aged in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks and smaller French oak barrels for approximately 12 months. This approach integrates structure and adds subtle complexity—notes of spice and toast—while maintaining the purity of the fruit.

The wine is then further refined in bottle before release. Alcohol levels typically fall around 13–13.5%, supported by Sangiovese’s naturally high acidity and fine tannic structure. The result is a Chianti Classico that is both traditional in style and polished in execution.

    Tasting Notes
The 2022 Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico displays a bright ruby red color with violet reflections, characteristic of youthful Sangiovese. The nose is expressive and layered, opening with aromas of red cherry, cranberry, and wild strawberry, complemented by hints of violet and rose.

As the wine evolves, more complex notes emerge—subtle spice, dried herbs, and a touch of earth are interwoven with nuances of tobacco and a faint mineral edge. The aromatic profile is both vibrant and nuanced, reflecting the balance achieved in the vineyard and cellar.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with a lively, energetic structure. Bright acidity drives the wine, carrying flavors of red cherry, raspberry, and pomegranate through a finely textured mid-palate.

The tannins are firm yet well-integrated, providing structure without harshness. A subtle savory note—suggestive of herbs and a hint of balsamic—adds depth and complexity.

The finish is long and refreshing, marked by lingering red fruit, spice, and a characteristic Tuscan earthiness. The overall impression is one of balance and authenticity, capturing the essence of Chianti Classico in a refined and approachable style.

    Food Pairing & Service
Chianti Classico 2022 is a quintessential food wine, its acidity and structure making it an ideal partner for a wide range of dishes, particularly those rooted in Italian cuisine.

Classic pairings include pasta with tomato-based sauces, such as spaghetti al pomodoro or lasagna, where the wine’s acidity complements the brightness of the dish. It also pairs beautifully with roasted meats, including chicken, pork, and lamb, as well as grilled vegetables.

Traditional Tuscan dishes—such as ribollita, bistecca alla fiorentina, or dishes featuring herbs and olive oil—highlight the wine’s savory and herbal nuances. The wine also pairs well with aged cheeses, particularly Pecorino, where its structure and acidity provide balance.

Serve at 60–65°F (15–18°C) in a standard red wine glass. Decanting for 20–30 minutes can help the wine open and enhance its aromatic expression, particularly in its youth.

    Cellaring Potential
The 2022 Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico has the structure and balance to age gracefully over the next 5–8 years. While approachable upon release, it will benefit from short-term cellaring to allow its components to integrate more fully.

With time, the wine’s bright red fruit will evolve into more complex flavors—dried cherry, leather, and earthy spice—while maintaining its underlying freshness. The tannins will soften, and the overall texture will become more harmonious.

For those seeking a classic, terroir-driven Chianti Classico that offers both immediate enjoyment and moderate aging potential, this wine provides a compelling and authentic expression of the region.
