Terroir
The 2022 “Throwback Red” from Canard Vineyard is sourced from select vineyard sites across Napa Valley, blending fruit from different microclimates to create a more layered, old-school inspired interpretation of Napa Valley red wine. The warmer valley-floor sites contribute ripe, generous fruit character, while cooler benchland parcels add freshness, aromatic lift, and structural tension. This multi-site sourcing approach reflects a classic California blending philosophy, where balance is achieved through vineyard diversity rather than a single terroir expression.
Napa Valley’s Mediterranean climate—marked by long, sunny days and cool nocturnal breezes—ensures full ripening while preserving acidity. The diurnal shift is especially important for maintaining freshness in blended reds, preventing excessive ripeness from dominating the profile.
Soils vary significantly across the sourcing footprint, ranging from gravelly alluvial fans to clay-loam and volcanic-derived compositions. These differences contribute to a wine with both richness and structure, echoing a more traditional, balanced Napa style rather than a purely modern, fruit-driven one.
Winemaking & Technical Notes
At Canard Vineyard, the “Throwback Red” is conceived as a nod to earlier Napa Valley blending traditions—where structure, drinkability, and balance were prioritized alongside ripeness.Grapes are harvested at optimal maturity and vinified separately by variety and vineyard block. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, with controlled temperatures to preserve fruit purity and allow for precise extraction.
Gentle pump-overs and moderate maceration are used to build structure without excessive tannin extraction. The aim is a supple, layered texture rather than overt concentration.
After fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels, with a balanced use of new and seasoned oak to maintain fruit expression while adding subtle spice, cedar, and softness. Aging typically spans 12–18 months, depending on vintage conditions.
The final blend is composed of traditional Bordeaux varieties—most commonly Cabernet Sauvignon with supporting roles from Merlot and other complementary grapes—designed to emphasize approachability, balance, and versatility.
Alcohol levels generally sit in the mid-14% range, supported by moderate acidity and polished tannins.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 “Throwback Red” shows a vibrant ruby-purple color with good clarity and depth. The nose is immediately inviting, opening with aromas of red and black cherry, blackberry, and plum, layered with hints of cassis and ripe raspberry. As the wine evolves in the glass, secondary notes of vanilla, cocoa, and baking spice emerge, alongside subtle hints of cedar, tobacco, and dried herbs. A faint earthy undertone adds complexity and depth.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a supple and approachable texture. A core of ripe red and dark fruit is supported by smooth, integrated tannins that provide gentle structure without weight.
Flavors of cherry, blackberry, and plum are complemented by mocha, spice, and a touch of savory herbal character. The acidity is balanced, lending freshness and keeping the wine lively and drinkable.
The finish is medium-long, with lingering notes of fruit, soft oak spice, and a gentle earthiness. The overall impression is one of harmony and approachability, with a nostalgic nod to earlier Napa blending styles.
Food Pairing & Service
“Throwback Red” is designed for versatility at the table, pairing easily with a wide range of everyday and classic dishes. It works beautifully with grilled meats such as burgers, flank steak, or roast chicken, where its fruit-forward profile and soft tannins complement savory, charred flavors. It also pairs well with barbecue dishes—especially ribs or pulled pork with tomato-based sauces.
For Italian-inspired pairings, consider spaghetti Bolognese, lasagna, or mushroom and sausage pasta dishes, which align with the wine’s fruit, spice, and herbal notes.
It also performs well with pizza topped with cured meats, roasted vegetables, or mushrooms, as well as semi-aged cheeses like Manchego or young cheddar.
Serve at 60–65°F (15–18°C) in a standard red wine glass. No decanting is necessary, though a brief aeration will enhance aromatic expression.
Cellaring Potential
The 2022 “Throwback Red” is intended primarily for near- to mid-term enjoyment, with its peak expression occurring within 3–6 years of release. While it has enough structure to evolve modestly over time, it is not designed for long-term cellaring. In the short term, it may gain slight integration and softness, but its defining appeal lies in its freshness, fruit purity, and accessibility.
For optimal enjoyment, this wine is best consumed while its vibrant fruit and supple texture are at their most expressive.
