Terroir
Charmes-Chambertin is one of the celebrated Grand Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin in the Côte de Nuits, within Burgundy. The vineyard lies on well-draining limestone and marl soils with pockets of clay that provide both structure and aromatic generosity. Compared to some of Gevrey’s more muscular crus, Charmes-Chambertin is often associated with refinement and seductive texture, though it retains the backbone typical of the village. The 2019 vintage in Burgundy was marked by warmth and low yields, producing small, concentrated berries with thick skins and excellent phenolic ripeness. Despite the heat of the growing season, balanced acidity was preserved, resulting in wines of both power and precision.
Winemaking & Technical Notes
Crafted entirely from Pinot Noir, the fruit is hand harvested and carefully sorted to ensure only pristine clusters enter fermentation. Traditional Burgundian vinification is employed, with fermentation in open-top vats and gentle extraction through punch-downs and pump-overs tailored to vintage conditions. The wine is aged in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, for approximately 16–18 months. The oak is used judiciously to frame the fruit rather than dominate it, enhancing texture and complexity while allowing vineyard character to remain central.
The 2019 reflects both the concentration of the vintage and the inherent elegance of Charmes-Chambertin.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine presents a deep ruby hue with subtle garnet reflections. Aromatically, it opens with layers of ripe black cherry, raspberry, and wild strawberry, interwoven with rose petal, baking spice, and forest floor. With aeration, nuances of clove, cedar, and crushed stone emerge. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet finely structured. Concentrated red and black fruits are supported by firm, well-integrated tannins and vibrant acidity that provides lift and length. The texture is velvety but precise, reflecting both the warmth of the vintage and the discipline of the appellation.
The finish is long and layered, carrying notes of dark cherry, spice, and subtle mineral tension.
Food Pairing & Service
Serve at 58–62°F and decant for at least 90 minutes when young. The wine pairs beautifully with duck breast, roast lamb, venison, or mushroom-based dishes such as porcini risotto. It also complements aged Comté or Époisses. Its balance of richness and structure allows it to stand alongside refined, savory cuisine without overwhelming delicate flavors.
Cellaring & Longevityrevq
The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru possesses the structure and concentration to age gracefully for 20–30 years. While approachable with extended decanting, optimal drinking is anticipated from 2027 onward. With time, primary fruit will evolve toward dried cherry, truffle, leather, and earthy spice. Properly cellared, this wine will gain nuance and aromatic complexity, showcasing the enduring pedigree of Charmes-Chambertin.
