Christian Gosset’s La Cheminée 2017 is a remarkable single-parcel Blanc de Noirs from Aÿ, one of Champagne’s great Grand Cru villages and a historic stronghold for Pinot Noir.

Produced entirely from Pinot Noir planted in 1993 in the lieu-dit La Cheminée, the vineyard sits high on the hillside on a steep, west-facing slope over chalk. The wine is vinified entirely in oak barrels, without filtration or cold stabilization, and finished with an exceptionally low dosage of just 1 g/L.

This is Champagne with the depth and structure of a serious still wine: broad and concentrated on the palate, with notes of ripe and cooked fruit, plum, almond, biscuit and black tea wrapped around a fine, chalky mineral core. Despite its richness, there is excellent tension and salinity, carrying the wine through a long, savory and beautifully persistent finish.
