Krug Vintage 2013 captures the distinctive character of a cool, late-growing season in Champagne. After a cold and rainy spring delayed flowering, a warm, dry summer allowed the grapes to mature slowly, culminating in an unusually late harvest that stretched from late September into October. Krug’s tasting committee ultimately nicknamed the vintage “Exalted Citrus,” reflecting the remarkable freshness and aromatic intensity found in the finished wine.

The blend is 41% Pinot Noir, 38% Chardonnay and 21% Meunier, composed entirely from wines of the 2013 harvest. While Pinot Noir forms the largest part of the blend and provides structure and balance, Chardonnay is particularly expressive in this vintage, giving the wine its vivid citrus character and precision. Meunier contributes additional freshness, tension and subtle bitterness. The wine spent approximately 11 years in Krug’s cellars before release.

The nose opens with lemon and bitter orange, developing into candied citrus, toasted almond and honey. On the palate, it is exceptionally focused and energetic, with layers of lemon, blood orange, grapefruit and tangerine carried by an ample, beautifully structured texture. The combination of citrus intensity, fine acidity and considerable depth leads into an exceptionally long, precise finish.

A particularly vibrant expression of Krug, the 2013 combines the richness and complexity associated with the house with striking freshness and definition. It is compelling now for its energy and purity, while its structure and extended cellar aging suggest considerable potential for further development in bottle.
