Krug Vintage 2011 is the Maison’s interpretation of one of Champagne’s most unusual growing seasons, a year Krug describes as having “seasons reversed.” An exceptionally warm spring brought very early flowering, followed by a cooler, wetter summer and dramatic weather immediately before harvest. Krug ultimately found sufficient individuality in the year to create a vintage Champagne, giving the finished wine the nickname “Spirited Roundness.”

The blend is 46% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 17% Meunier, composed exclusively from wines of the 2011 harvest. Pinot Noir provides the wine’s structure and balance, while the unusually ripe Chardonnay contributes generosity and juicy fruit. Meunier brings freshness and a subtle bitter edge that helps give the wine definition. The Champagne spent approximately 11 years in Krug’s cellars before receiving its cork in autumn 2022.

The 2011 shows a distinctive combination of richness and freshness. Aromas of white fruit, citrus and star fruit are joined by more savory notes of herbs and liquorice. On the palate, it begins broad and enveloping, with pastry and stewed-fruit character, before becoming increasingly precise and energetic. Smoky and herbal nuances lead into a long, mouthwatering finish marked by grapefruit zest and a distinctly saline character.

A fascinating expression of Krug and a vintage with a personality very much its own, the 2011 combines the depth and vinous character expected from the house with an unusually fresh, savory and energetic finish. It is already highly expressive but has the structure and complexity to develop beautifully with further bottle age.
