    Terroir

Côte du Py is the crown jewel of Morgon, a volcanic hill composed of ancient schist, blue-stone, decomposed granite, and manganese-rich soils. This unique geological mix creates Gamay of remarkable depth, structure, and aromatic intensity. The slope rises above the village of Villié-Morgon, offering excellent south and southeast exposures, allowing grapes to ripen fully while retaining lift and mineral tension. The 2023 vintage in the Beaujolais crus was defined by a warm, even growing season with excellent sunlight and modest rain—ideal for producing fruit of vibrant purity and ripe tannins without heaviness. As a result, this bottling captures Côte du Py’s signature: dark-fruited concentration, volcanic spice, and age-worthy structure, while still expressing the floral charm and energy of Gamay grown at altitude.

    Winemaking & Technical Notes
Mommessin continues its tradition of crafting Morgon with a mix of whole-cluster and destemmed fruit, depending on the ripeness of stems in the vintage. Fermentation occurs via traditional semi-carbonic maceration, where whole berries undergo intracellular fermentation before crushing—preserving vivid aromatics and freshness. Maceration lasts about 10–15 days in concrete tanks to gently extract tannin and color while maintaining elegance. The wine is then aged in a combination of large neutral foudres and cement vats, allowing the structure of Côte du Py to develop without the influence of new oak. It is bottled with minimal filtration to preserve texture and terroir detail. Alcohol is typically around 13%, making it both concentrated and wonderfully balanced.

    Tasting Notes
The 2023 Côte du Py opens with deep, expressive aromas of black cherry, boysenberry, ripe plum, and mulberry, layered with hints of violet, clove, cracked granite, licorice root, and smoked herbs. On the palate, the wine is silky yet firm, delivering a core of dark, juicy Gamay fruit wrapped in volcanic minerality and fine, grippy tannins. Flavors of black raspberry, damson, red currant, and cocoa husk evolve toward more savory notes—iron, warm stone, and subtle char—as the wine breathes. Vibrant acidity keeps the profile energetic, while the finish is long, spicy, and slightly earthy, with lingering notes of peppercorn, graphite, and fresh violets. This is classic Côte du Py: sensual fruit, geological depth, and serious structure beneath its charm.

    Food Pairing & Service
Serve at 58–60 °F (14–16 °C) to highlight freshness and minerality. A brief 15–20 minute decant helps open the aromatics. This wine excels at the table, pairing beautifully with:

    • Herb-roasted chicken or duck with cherry glaze
    • Seared pork tenderloin with mustard and thyme
    • Charcuterie, pâté, or saucisson sec
    • Wild mushroom ragù over polenta
    • Grilled salmon or tuna with Provençal herbs

For a regional touch, pair with Coq au Beaujolais or roasted gamay-marinated sausage. Drink now for its vivid fruit, or cellar 6–10 years to allow the volcanic, savory notes of Côte du Py to deepen and broade
