    Terroir
Koosah Vineyard is located in the Eola–Amity Hills AVA of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, a site widely regarded for producing some of the region’s most structured and age-worthy Pinot Noir. The vineyard sits on elevated, wind-exposed slopes shaped by the Van Duzer Corridor, where persistent afternoon breezes funnel in from the Pacific Ocean. These cooling winds significantly slow ripening, preserving acidity and extending hang time while thickening grape skins—an essential factor in building aromatic depth and tannin structure.

The soils at Koosah are dominated by volcanic basalt (Jory and Nekia series), well-drained and iron-rich, contributing both mineral tension and savory depth. These soils naturally limit vigor, encouraging low yields and concentrated fruit. The 2023 vintage benefited from a long, even growing season with moderate summer temperatures and a calm, dry harvest window, allowing for excellent phenolic maturity without excess sugar accumulation. The result is a Pinot Noir that reflects the Eola–Amity Hills’ signature combination of energy, precision, and quiet power.

    Winemaking & Technical Notes
Granville Wine Co. approaches Koosah Vineyard with a philosophy centered on restraint and transparency. Fruit is hand-harvested at optimal physiological ripeness and sorted carefully to ensure purity. Fermentation proceeds with native yeasts, emphasizing site expression over cellar imprint, and extraction is gentle, favoring finesse rather than density.

The wine is aged in French oak barrels, largely neutral, allowing subtle oxygen exchange without masking the vineyard’s character. The élevage is designed to build texture and integration rather than overt oak influence. Minimal intervention throughout the process ensures the wine’s structure, aromatics, and balance remain faithful to the vineyard and vintage.

    Tasting Notes
The 2023 Koosah Vineyard Pinot Noir opens with a poised and expressive aromatic profile. Red and dark fruits—black cherry, wild raspberry, and red currant—lead the nose, followed by layers of dried rose petal, blood orange zest, and subtle baking spice. As the wine opens, savory notes emerge: forest floor, crushed basalt, and a faint hint of clove and tea leaf, lending depth and complexity.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet remarkably structured. The fruit profile mirrors the nose, with cherry skin, cranberry, and pomegranate unfolding across a finely tuned frame. Acidity is vibrant and linear, giving the wine lift and drive, while tannins are finely grained and persistent, providing shape without heaviness. There is a distinct mineral presence—cool, stony, and slightly saline—that anchors the fruit and speaks clearly to Koosah’s volcanic soils and wind-influenced climate.

The finish is long and composed, tapering gracefully with notes of red fruit, dried herbs, and subtle earth. The wine feels youthful but already harmonious, offering immediate pleasure while clearly built for evolution over the next decade.

    Food Pairing & Service
This Pinot Noir’s balance of freshness, structure, and savory nuance makes it exceptionally versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with herb-roasted chicken, duck breast with cherry or pomegranate accents, and grilled salmon. Earth-driven dishes such as mushroom risotto, lentils with herbs, or pork loin with thyme and fennel highlight the wine’s savory dimension. Soft to medium-aged cheeses—particularly bloomy rind or washed-rind styles—also complement its texture and acidity.

Serve at 58–62°F (14–17°C) in a Burgundy-style glass. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes is beneficial when young, allowing the aromatics to fully unfold. While approachable now, the 2023 Koosah Vineyard Pinot Noir will reward patience, developing additional complexity and depth over 8–12 years.
