Terroir
Belle Époque 2016 is a luminous expression of Champagne, crafted from a meticulous selection of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards that define the house style of Perrier-Jouët. The cuvée is anchored in Chardonnay—primarily sourced from the Côte des Blancs villages of Cramant and Avize—renowned for their pure chalk soils and ability to produce wines of exceptional finesse and longevity. These chalk-rich soils, formed from ancient marine sediments, provide excellent drainage while retaining sufficient moisture to sustain the vines through dry periods. More importantly, they act as a natural regulator, reflecting sunlight and contributing to the slow, even ripening of the grapes. This terroir is central to the crystalline purity and mineral tension that define the wine.
Complementing the Chardonnay are carefully selected parcels of Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims and Pinot Meunier from the Vallée de la Marne. Pinot Noir contributes structure and depth, while Meunier adds a gentle roundness and approachability.
The 2016 vintage in Champagne was marked by climatic contrasts—challenging early conditions followed by a warm, dry summer. Careful vineyard selection was essential, and the resulting fruit displays both concentration and freshness. The interplay of chalk soils, varied exposures, and a nuanced growing season results in a wine that balances elegance with quiet intensity.
Winemaking & Technical Notes
Belle Époque is produced only in vintages deemed exceptional, reflecting a commitment to both quality and identity. The 2016 release continues this tradition, showcasing a blend dominated by Chardonnay, with smaller proportions of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Each parcel is vinified separately to preserve its individual character. Primary fermentation takes place in stainless steel under strict temperature control, maintaining aromatic precision and purity. Malolactic fermentation is generally allowed, softening acidity and contributing to the wine’s creamy texture while preserving balance.
Following blending, the wine undergoes secondary fermentation in bottle according to the traditional method. It is then aged extensively on its lees—often for a minimum of six years—developing complexity, texture, and the signature autolytic character of fine Champagne.
Dosage is kept in the Brut range, carefully calibrated to balance the wine’s natural acidity without obscuring its mineral core. The final alcohol level typically sits around 12–12.5%, maintaining freshness and elegance.
The iconic bottle, adorned with hand-painted white anemones inspired by Émile Gallé, reflects the house’s deep connection to art and nature—an aesthetic that mirrors the wine’s refined and expressive character.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Belle Époque 2016 shimmers with a pale gold hue, animated by a fine, persistent mousse. The aromatic profile is immediately elegant and layered, opening with white flowers—acacia and hawthorn—alongside fresh citrus notes of lemon zest and grapefruit. As the wine evolves, more complex aromas emerge: ripe orchard fruits such as pear and white peach, intertwined with subtle hints of brioche, almond, and honey. A delicate mineral note—reminiscent of chalk dust—runs through the bouquet, adding precision and lift.
On the palate, the wine is defined by its harmony and finesse. A vibrant, finely tuned acidity provides structure and energy, while a creamy texture—derived from extended lees aging—adds depth and roundness. Flavors of citrus, green apple, and stone fruit are layered with nuances of toasted hazelnut, pastry, and a touch of vanilla.
The mousse is delicate and integrated, enhancing the wine’s silky mouthfeel. The finish is long, refined, and mineral-driven, with lingering notes of citrus, floral elegance, and subtle autolytic complexity. It is a Champagne that balances freshness with richness, delivering both immediacy and depth.
Food Pairing & Service
Belle Époque 2016 is a versatile and gastronomic Champagne, capable of elevating a wide range of dishes while maintaining its sense of refinement. It pairs beautifully with seafood, particularly oysters, scallops, and lobster, where its acidity and minerality enhance the natural sweetness and brininess of the dishes. Delicate fish preparations—such as sole meunière or turbot—also complement the wine’s elegance.
For richer pairings, consider poultry dishes with cream-based sauces, such as chicken with morels, or veal in a light jus. The wine’s texture and complexity also allow it to pair with aged cheeses like Comté or Parmesan.
Serve chilled at 45–50°F (7–10°C) in a tulip-shaped Champagne glass to concentrate aromatics while allowing the wine to open. While immediately expressive, allowing the wine a few minutes in the glass will reveal additional layers of nuance.
Cellaring Potential
The 2016 Belle Époque possesses excellent aging potential, supported by its vibrant acidity, balanced structure, and extended lees aging. While it is already approachable, it will continue to evolve gracefully over the next 10–15 years, and potentially longer under ideal conditions. With time, the wine will develop deeper tertiary characteristics—notes of toasted brioche, hazelnut, honey, and dried fruit—while maintaining its underlying freshness and mineral backbone. The mousse will become even more integrated, and the texture increasingly refined.
For collectors and enthusiasts, cellaring this vintage offers the opportunity to experience the full evolution of one of Champagne’s most elegant and iconic cuvées, revealing greater depth, complexity, and harmony with age.
