The 2019 Brut Les Fortes Terres, 100% Meunier, is powerful and resonant in the glass. Pear, ginger, lemon confit, tangerine oil, sage and dried herbs build over time. The 2019 offers an attractive mix of brightness and layered volume. It's another gorgeous wine from Moussé. Drinking Window 2024 - 2032 - By Antonio Galloni on March 2024Terroir
“Les Fortes Terres” comes from a single, distinctive parcel in Cuisles, within the Vallée de la Marne, an area traditionally associated with Meunier but increasingly recognized for its complex terroir expressions. The vineyard sits on steep, south-facing slopes, where clay-limestone soils dominate, interspersed with pockets of chalk and calcareous marl. These soils retain water well while still offering enough drainage to encourage deep root systems, lending both power and precision to the fruit.Cuisles is particularly notable for its green clay (argiles vertes), a soil type that tends to produce wines with breadth, savory depth, and a subtle earthy resonance. Combined with the cool Champagne climate and consistent exposure, the site produces Meunier of uncommon seriousness—less about overt fruitiness, more about structure and mineral weight.
The 2019 vintage was warm and dry, yielding ripe fruit with excellent concentration. However, cooler nights toward harvest preserved acidity, allowing wines like Les Fortes Terres to retain freshness despite their depth. This balance between ripeness and tension is one of the defining traits of the vintage and shows clearly in this bottling.
Winemaking & Technical Notes
Moussé Fils farms organically and works with a low-intervention philosophy, aiming to translate site expression rather than impose house style. “Les Fortes Terres” is made from 100% Pinot Meunier, sourced exclusively from the namesake parcel.Fermentation takes place primarily in oak barrels, encouraging gentle oxygen exchange and building texture without overt wood character. Malolactic fermentation is allowed, softening the natural acidity while enhancing mouthfeel. The wine is bottled for secondary fermentation and aged extensively on the lees, allowing autolytic complexity to develop slowly and naturally.
Dosage is kept very low, reinforcing the wine’s dry, mineral-driven profile and allowing the savory, clay-influenced character of the vineyard to remain front and center. The result is a Champagne that feels more vinous and architectural than purely celebratory.
Tasting Notes
From the first pour, “Les Fortes Terres” 2019 communicates depth and intent. The mousse is fine and persistent, rising gently rather than explosively, setting the tone for a Champagne of composure rather than flash. On the nose, the wine opens with ripe orchard fruit—yellow apple, pear skin, and quince—layered with dried citrus peel and subtle stone fruit flesh. Quickly, more savory and complex notes emerge: fresh bread dough, toasted grain, crushed limestone, and damp clay. There is a faint herbal nuance—almost tea-like—that adds lift and intrigue without turning green.
The palate is where the wine truly distinguishes itself. Broad and textured on entry, it carries flavors of baked apple, lemon oil, and stone fruit wrapped in a firm mineral core. The clay soils show themselves through a gentle earthy savoriness, giving the wine weight without heaviness. Acidity is present but not sharp; instead, it acts as a structural spine, guiding the wine forward and preventing the richness from becoming diffuse.
Mid-palate, autolytic notes deepen—hazelnut skin, brioche crumb, and a whisper of smoke—before tightening again toward the finish. The low dosage leaves the impression clean and dry, with lingering notes of chalk dust, citrus pith, and saline minerality.
The finish is long, serious, and quietly powerful, more contemplative than exuberant. This is a Champagne that rewards attention and unfolds slowly in the glass.
Food Pairing & Service
“Les Fortes Terres” is exceptionally food-friendly and shines brightest at the table. Its structure and savory undertones pair beautifully with dishes that echo its depth:Think roast chicken with lemon and herbs, pork loin with apple and fennel, or mushroom-based dishes such as risotto or a simple omelet with truffle. It also works superbly with aged Comté, Gruyère, or Chaource, where the wine’s acidity and mineral edge cut through richness while amplifying umami .Seafood pairings benefit from its textural weight—scallops, lobster, or crab are excellent matches, particularly when prepared with butter or subtle spice.
Serve slightly warmer than standard Champagne, around 50–54°F (10–12°C), in a white Burgundy glass to fully express its aromatic range and layered palate. While no decanting is necessary, the wine improves markedly with time in the glass.
Aging Potential
While already compelling, “Les Fortes Terres” 2019 is built for evolution. Over the next 8–15 years, expect the fruit to recede gradually, making way for deeper tertiary notes of toasted nut, dried herbs, beeswax, and earth, while the mineral framework remains intact. This is a Champagne that will gain complexity rather than lose vitality with age. Name:
