The Place: Emilia-Romagna, Italy Villa Papiano is nestled at 2000 feet elevation between Romagna and Tuscany and wedged amid large forests. The sometimes severe elements of this unique area arise as protagonists in creating exceptional wines: The Apennine border with poor soils of marl and sandstone, the sedimentary rock formation from Marnosa-Arenacea era and the deep forest surrounding the vineyards determine vibrant aromas an underlying freshness.

The Winery & Winemaker: Villa Papiano is managed and farmed by four siblings that have taken their passion and life skills and combined them in perfect harmony. Francesco follows the company in terms of winemaking, style and production. Maria Rosa is in charge of commercial relations, Giampaolo of management and Enrica of the administration. Their first harvest was in 2001. Over the years they have come to know their territory profoundly, its nuances and idiosyncrasies. Their taste and style were constructed piece by piece under the instruction of these lands and by the explorations of their hands, giving merit to the vineyards they cultivate. They attempt to create wines that speak of light, resonating in an aromatic array where salinity becomes the backbone, and the substance of the grape, rather than focusing on the overbearing nature that oak can sometimes bring. This gives the delicate structure they are looking for, showing off the unique nature of their indigenous varieties. The original vineyards were planted in the 1960s and restored by the family in 2001.

The Wine: Sourced from one of the oldest single vineyards at Villa Papiano, “Papesse” is a classic expression of Sangiovese from Romagna. Grown on the sandstone soils of the Apennines at over 500 m of altitude, it offers a ton of crushed wild berries wrapped in savory mineral notes. The cold mountain climate allows for a refreshing, mouth-cleansing acidity that balances out the firm tannins.
